The Cameron Highlands is an area of Malaysia renowned for its gorgeous rolling hills, tea plantations and jungle trekking. It was a must-see place to stop on our tour of Malaysia so we spent a lot of time researching family-friendly, affordable accommodation.
The town of Tanah Rata is at the heart of the Cameron Highlands, and a perfect base for exploring the area.
The Avillion Hotel is centrally located in Tanah Rata and hosts child-friendly facilities which was exactly what we were looking for. The hotel prides itself on being modern and stylish in the heart of the highlands. Jungle treks, strawberry picking and waterfalls are right on the doorstep.
Location
The Avillion is a five minute walk from the Tanah Rata bus station and it has free parking on site making it super easy to get to.
The hotel itself is part of a larger complex which also hosts a handful of cafe’s, small convenience stores, tour companies and a little children’s arcade.
Being in central Tanah Rata there are some great restaurants nearby such as the Mossy Forest Cafe, the Amsterdam Cafe and the Jasmine Cafe right on your doorstep. That means less walking for those little legs!
There are a number of jungle treks which are easily walkable with kids from the hotel. We enjoyed Trail 9 to the waterfall.
Sleep
the Avillion offers rooms of all sizes from one bedroom through to larger suites. We stayed in a beautiful three-bedroom suite which was the perfect size for our family. There was enough room for running around and for the boys to go to bed in the evening while we relaxed in the sitting area or on the balcony. Within our suite we had a kitchen/ dining area, a sitting area, two bathrooms and a large balcony which looked out over the Highlands.
The rooms were exceptionally clean and beautifully furnished so we settled in quickly ready for exploring. We were treated to robes, slippers and toiletries… and Fin discovered the joys of shower caps! The rooms are cleaned daily and water / hot drinks topped up.
Play
Fin’s favourite part of our stay at the Avillion was the playground. The hotel is built around a central courtyard which hosts a brilliant well-maintained playground with climbing frame, swings, see-saws and plenty of shade. Some rooms lead straight out into the playground which is perfect for watching the kids from the room! For an extra RM10 you can hire pop-up play tents for children to play with in the room too.
Eat
Now, we all know how fussy kids can be when it comes to eating. Having travelled the world with a fussy toddler we have sometimes struggled to find familiar foods! Thankfully, the Avillion puts on an extensive breakfast buffet which includes a range child-friendly options! Fin filled up on cereal, fruit, toast, beans and omelettes each morning. For for the more adventurous, there’s also Malaysian noodles, rice, dumplings and vegetables! Oh and unlimited coffee to keep us parents sane.
The hotel restaurant not only serves a great breakfast buffet, but delicious dinners too. The hotel restaurant also offers steamboat dinners – a dish which the Cameron Highlands is famed for where the food is cooked at your table.
We had a great stay at the Avillion and would recommend it as a family friendly hotel in the heart of the Cameron Highlands.
